The poultry red mite, Dermanyssus gallinae, is the commercially most signiﬁcant ectoparasite globally, aﬀecting production systems in the chicken egg-laying industry. Their prevalence alters the health condition of the birds, causing stress, mortality and decline of egg quality which impact the economic performance. They have also been implicated as potential reservoirs for several commercially important and zoonotic diseases.
Though chemical control of poultry red mites remains the dominant method in commercial farms, conventional acaricidal treatments may give only limited or short-lived reductions in mite populations due to both, the diﬃculties associated with eﬀective application and the emergence of acaricide resistance. Moreover, the reclusive and nocturnal habits of the mites (mostly oﬀ the host for several days), followed by only intermittent feeding, prevents the contact with the treated surfaces and further exacerbates the infestations. As a result of the research activity, based on our ethnobotanical experience, a novel red mite solution called LIMITER was developed. LIMITER is a stable combination of plant derived oils designed on a pragmatic and rational approach of reducing mites through a multipronged strategy. It induces gustatory avoidance, olfactory repellency and also has biopesticidal properties of contact and vapour toxicity. Based on the modes of delivery, it is available in two variants, one for use in drinking water and other as a spray option.
Mode of Action
Essential oil presents in Limiter acts on post synaptic acetylcholine receptors via competitive inhibition, hindering the acetycholine binding. The absence of signal transmission result into depolization of nicotinic acetylcholine receptor(acetylcholine receptors at neuro muscular junction) via increase ﬂow of chloride ions into the muscle cells, resulting into hyper stimulation of muscle cells and consequently paralysis and death in red mites.
