Prevent Red Mites Infestation In Poultry

Dermanyssus gallinae (the most common red mite) are blood sucking ectoparasites that infest the poultry sector especially chickens and turkeys. They are generally white or greyish in color, becoming darker or redder when engorged with blood. After feeding, they hide in cracks and crevices away from daylight, where they mate and lay eggs.

Life Cycle

The life cycle from egg to adult mite is only seven days, and they progresses through 5 life stages

Egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph and adult. Under favorable conditions this life cycle can be completed within seven days. They start off as very small greyish-white mites that swell up into red colored mites after a feed and at their biggest are only 0.7mm so small numbers of them can be hard to spot unless you know what to look for.
